Algeria’s Samir Chergui sends strong World Cup warning ahead of Argentina clash
Algerian defender Samir Chergui has delivered a bold message ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting that Algeria’s objective against reigning champions Argentina national football team is simple: victory.
With only weeks remaining before Algeria begin their World Cup campaign, confidence appears to be growing within the squad. Speaking to El Bilad TV, Chergui discussed the team’s ambitions for the tournament, the challenge of facing Argentina in their opening match and the prospect of lining up against Argentine captain Lionel Messi.
Algeria will return to the global stage with hopes of making a significant impact, and Chergui made it clear that the players are not travelling to the tournament merely to participate. Instead, he said the squad is focused on advancing as far as possible.
“It’s about going as far as possible. There’s no room for improvement, it’s about going as far as possible. We’re going to give everything, do our utmost to try and go as far as we can.”
The defender believes the team must approach the competition with ambition and determination from the outset, particularly as they prepare for a demanding opening fixture against one of world football’s strongest nations.
Argentina, the reigning world champions, will provide Algeria’s first test of the tournament. While many observers consider the South Americans favourites, Chergui insisted that facing elite opposition should inspire rather than intimidate the Algerian squad.
The opportunity to play against Messi, widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time, is viewed by the defender as an additional source of motivation.
“A match like this can only boost you; you give even more. You’re playing against Messi, the best player in the world. It will only make you want to do better. It won’t discourage you; in fact, you’ll give it your all.”
Despite the challenge posed by the world champions, Chergui stressed that Algeria’s players intend to approach the match with a winning mentality.
“The objective is to win. We are ready.”
The statement reflects the confidence within coach Vladimir Petković’s squad as preparations continue for the tournament.
Algeria are scheduled to begin their 2026 World Cup campaign on 17 June with a high-profile clash against Argentina. The encounter will offer the Desert Foxes an immediate opportunity to test themselves against the holders and measure the scale of their ambitions on football’s biggest stage.
