Algeria revive interest in Hervé Renard amid uncertainty over Petkovic future

Algeria could once again turn to Hervé Renard if a change is made in the national team’s coaching position, with reports suggesting the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has softened its previous stance against appointing a French manager.

The development comes despite earlier indications that the federation had ruled out French candidates in its search for a possible successor to current head coach Vladimir Petkovic.

That position appeared to remove Renard from consideration, even with his impressive record in African football.

Any move for the French coach, however, remains dependent on Petkovic leaving his role. The Swiss tactician is still under contract with the Algerian national team, and no official announcement has been made regarding his future.

According to reports from Foot Mercato, Renard has re-emerged as a leading candidate should Algeria decide to part ways with Petkovic.

His achievements in Africa include guiding Zambia to the 2012 Africa Cup of Nations title before repeating the feat with Ivory Coast three years later, cementing his status as one of the continent’s most successful foreign managers.

The Frenchman is currently available after his brief spell in charge of Tunisia during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Since becoming a free agent, he has attracted interest from several national associations seeking an experienced coach.

South Korea is reported to have identified Renard as one of its preferred candidates following the departure of Hong Myung-bo after the country’s group-stage exit. His previous success with Saudi Arabia has also strengthened his reputation across Asian football.

Interest is not limited to Asia. Reports also link Renard with South Africa as a possible replacement for Hugo Broos, while his name has also been mentioned in connection with the Senegal national team.

Algeria’s search for stability has taken several twists in recent weeks. The federation was initially believed to favour appointing a local coach before reports emerged linking several Spanish candidates with the position.

The renewed interest in Renard suggests experience and a proven track record may now carry greater weight in the decision-making process.

His extensive knowledge of African football, ability to build competitive teams quickly and history of delivering success at major tournaments make him an attractive option for any national side seeking immediate results.

For now, however, Algeria’s immediate focus remains the future of Petkovic. Until his situation is resolved, any potential move for Renard is expected to remain on hold, despite growing speculation that he could once again become a leading contender for the Fennecs job.
