Nabil Fékir Keeps Algeria Option Open, Decision Expected After 2015 AFCON
Nabil Fékir’s international future remains undecided. The rising Olympique Lyonnais midfielder, who has been impressive in Ligue 1, is being courted by Algeria but has opted out of participating in the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations.
His father, Mohames Fékir, spoke on Algerian channel Ennahar TV, clarifying the family’s current stance:
“There may have been pressure related to the CAN. He and I decided that he wouldn’t play. We’d rather he devote himself entirely to his club this season.”
Despite choosing to focus on his development at Lyon for now, Fékir’s heart may still lean toward the Fennecs.
“He hasn’t made a final decision, but I hope he chooses Algeria; that’s my dream,” said his father. “He and his brothers are big supporters of El-Khedra.”
Mohames Fékir also emphasized that Nabil will make the decision himself, just as he did when signing his first professional contract, despite interest from several clubs.
The Algerian Football Federation, led by Mohamed Raouraoua, has reportedly been understanding of the player’s choice to delay his international commitment. Discussions are expected to resume after the 2015 AFCON, with a decision likely by March or April.
Until then, the suspense continues—but Algeria’s hopes of seeing Fékir in green remain very much alive.
