Supporters of Mouloudia Club of Algiers (MCA) have lodged an official complaint in response to what they describe as “offensive and unfair” remarks made against them in the aftermath of the fatal incidents at the July 5, 1962 Stadium in June.
The tragedy, which occurred on 21 June 2025 following a match against NC Magra, resulted in the deaths of four supporters and left over sixty others injured.
The fallout from the incident has continued to ripple across Algerian football, with Mouloudia fans determined to defend their reputation amid growing scrutiny.
This week, the Association of Friends and Lovers of Mouloudia of Algiers submitted a formal letter to President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, reiterating support for the state-led investigation while calling for legal action against those responsible for what they allege are defamatory comments.
While welcoming this institutional approach which reflects respect for the rule of law and guarantees the independence of justice, the Association of Friends and Lovers of the Mouloudia Club of Algiers has observed a responsible silence pending the finalization of the investigations and the publication of the official results, in order to preserve the integrity of the procedures and avoid any external influence, the letter stated.
However, the association voiced strong objections to remarks made in the media and by several public figures, including journalists and notably Rachid Hachichi, Chairman and CEO of the Sonatrach Group.
These comments, they argue, unfairly portray MCA fans as instigators of the chaos.
However, the hasty and offensive statements that followed, emanating from certain media and several public figures, the letter reads, notwithstanding the serious and unjustified accusations against the MCA supporters, have led to the decision to pursue legal action.
The supporters’ association contends that the statements in question have been widely circulated in the press and on television, fuelling what they call “disinformation campaigns” that tarnish the image of Mouloudia fans.
In this context and in accordance with the Algerian laws in force, we announce our intention to file an official complaint against any person who has contributed to these statements or practices undermining the honor and dignity of the club’s supporters, requesting that the whole truth be brought to the attention of public opinion and that the persons involved be brought to justice.
The letter goes on to affirm the group’s solidarity with the victims’ families and its commitment to seeing justice done, while rejecting any narrative that places blame on MCA fans for events they insist were beyond their control.
We request the public prosecutor at the Bir Mourad Raïs court to summon the journalists who made the remarks they made and which constitute anticipated judgments before any court decision, replacing magistrates, in clear violation of the law and in disregard of the rules and judicial institutions of the Republic.
Concluding the letter, the association vowed to continue defending the reputation of the club and its supporters through all legal means, underlining their confidence in state institutions and the rule of law.
