Riyad Mahrez, Youcef Atal’s teammate with the Algerian national team, has shared some advice for the young OGC Nice defender as he continues to develop his game.
Speaking after Manchester City’s victory over Chelsea on Saturday, the Citizens winger was asked to comment on Atal’s recent performances. While praising his talent and potential, Mahrez also pointed out an area where the Nice full-back could still improve.
“The only thing I’ll tell him is, when he goes on his dribbles, to lift his head a little. Because he plays like that, with his head down,” Mahrez said. “He has a very bright future and I hope he goes all the way to the top.”
Known for his explosive runs, quick feet and ability to beat opponents one-on-one, Atal has quickly become one of the most exciting young players in Ligue 1. His attacking instincts and dribbling skills make him a constant threat down the flank, but Mahrez believes adding better awareness and vision during his runs would make him even more effective.
The advice comes from experience, as Mahrez himself has built a career on combining close control with smart decision-making in the final third, whether by picking out a pass or finishing the move himself.
The two Algerian internationals are expected to reunite during the next FIFA international break with the national team. It will be another opportunity for Atal to learn from one of Africa’s most accomplished players — and perhaps put that advice into practice on the pitch.
