Algerian international Islam Slimani found himself in the spotlight during the African Nations Cup (AFCON 2013) Group D soccer match against Tunisia in Rustenburg, particularly after a reaction to a missed goal. Africa Top Sports rightfully recognized his prowess by nominating him for the prestigious title of “best African player” at the Africa Top Sports Awards 2013. The Sporting Lisbon striker had already secured the honor of being named the best Algerian footballer of the year 2013 by esteemed sports dailies “Le Buteur” and “El Heddaf.”
Slimani’s standout performance included being the top scorer for Algeria during the qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup, netting an impressive 5 goals. In the race for the title of the best Algerian player, he surpassed other notable football figures such as Safir Taider, Sofiane Feghouli, Yacine Brahimi, Essaid Belkalem, and Hilal Soudani.
The handover ceremony, graced by the presence of Brazilian legend Rivaldo and Argentinean star Javier Zanetti from Inter Milan, took place on Monday. While Sofiane Feghouli clinched the “Buteur and El Heddaf” golden ball trophy in the 2012 edition, Islam Slimani appears to be on the path to securing the title of “best African player” at the Africa Top Sports Awards 2013. Enthusiasts are invited to participate in the vote to determine the ultimate winner.
