After the tragic death of two supporters during the Algerian derby between MCA and USMA last Saturday, a commission of inquiry has been established to determine responsibilities for the incident. The commission, led by Moulay Chalal, the inspector general of the Algerian Ministry of Youth and Sports, includes Réda Doumi, director of productive studies and investment projects, and Mokhtar Boudina, the general director of sports development at the Ministry of Youth and Sports.
In response to the tragedy, Mahfoud Kerbadj, the president of the Professional Football League (LFP), disclaimed any responsibility on the part of the LFP. He stated that the LFP cannot be held accountable for the accident as it lacks the authority to inspect the stands, which falls under the responsibility of other relevant services. Kerbadj clarified that the League’s commission is primarily concerned with the approval of stadiums, focusing on aspects such as the state of the pitch, the locker rooms, and the exits.
As a precautionary measure, the July 5 stadium has been suspended pending the conclusions of the investigation by the commission. The incident has raised concerns and prompted a thorough examination of the circumstances leading to the tragic events during the Algerian derby.
