As Rayan Cherki and Maghnes Akliouche continue to delay their decisions on international allegiance, Algerian midfielder Haris Belkebla has weighed in on the matter, urging the duo to make a firm choice without hesitation.
For several years, the Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has actively pursued dual-national talents in an effort to strengthen the national squad.
Cherki, who plays for Olympique Lyonnais, and Akliouche, representing AS Monaco, have been key targets.
Despite repeated overtures, both players, who featured for the French under-21 team in March, have yet to provide a definitive answer regarding their international future.
“Players Should Not Be Chased”
Belkebla, speaking during a TikTok live session with Yacine Ferguson, expressed his frustration over the prolonged uncertainty surrounding the two youngsters.
“Every player has their reasons, but there should be no hesitation. I dislike default choices. Ultimately, we cannot read minds, but I prefer players who commit without second thoughts. You shouldn’t chase after players,” he stated firmly.
The Angers midfielder stressed that choosing Algeria should be a matter of genuine conviction rather than convenience.
A Call for Genuine Commitment
Belkebla further emphasized that players who wish to join the Fennecs must be fully dedicated to the cause.
“If a player wants to represent Algeria, he is welcome. But if someone keeps the national team waiting, it is limiting to say ‘wait for me’ indefinitely,” he added.
His comments reflect a growing sentiment within the Algerian squad—that the team should prioritise players who are fully committed rather than those who hesitate, hoping for a potential call-up from the French national team.
Will Cherki and Akliouche Make Their Decision?
So far, neither Cherki nor Akliouche has made an official declaration regarding their international future. Despite persistent efforts from the FAF and increasing pressure from fans, both players continue to keep their options open.
Their situation mirrors past cases, such as Nabil Fekir and Houssem Aouar, both of whom took time to decide their international allegiances.
Fekir, after much deliberation, chose to play for France in 2015 following pressure from Lyon president Jean-Michel Aulas, while Aouar eventually switched to represent Algeria two years ago.
With the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations and 2026 World Cup approaching, time is running out for Cherki and Akliouche to make their choice.
However, Belkebla’s remarks send a clear message—the Algerian national team will not wait indefinitely and will soon move on if a commitment is not made.
