Algeria midfielder Himad Abdelli faces growing scrutiny at Marseille despite

Himad Abdelli’s difficult start to life at Olympique de Marseille has continued despite the Algerian midfielder providing the assist for the winning goal in his side’s 2-1 victory over Nîmes Olympique.

The 25-year-old started the match and set up Igor Paixão’s decisive goal, but his contribution did little to change the opinion of some Marseille supporters, who have continued to criticise his performances since his arrival from Angers SCO in February.

Abdelli has struggled to win over sections of the fanbase, with criticism regularly focusing on his physical condition and influence during matches.

Among the complaints most frequently directed at the Algeria international are claims that he is “too slow” and that his passing lacks intensity. Those concerns resurfaced following his latest appearance despite his involvement in the winning goal.

The midfielder has also faced comments about his physique in recent weeks.

Following Marseille’s first match against Yamoussoukro FC in Abidjan around 10 days ago, some supporters mocked Abdelli over his appearance.

However, he was not the only player who appeared to be carrying extra weight, although much of the criticism was directed specifically at him.

His display against Nîmes also came alongside performances from several teammates who endured difficult outings. Nigerian midfielder Tochukwu Nnadi was unable to make a significant impact, while Amine Harit also struggled to influence the game.

Despite that, much of the post-match discussion centred on Abdelli.

The criticism directed at the former Angers midfielder has led to suggestions that the reaction from some supporters has gone beyond normal sporting debate.

While there is acknowledgement that Abdelli is still working towards his best physical condition and has lacked consistency in his decision-making, questions over his overall quality have continued to dominate conversations.

Even so, Marseille are expected to continue placing their trust in the Algeria international.

With head coach Bruno Génésio’s current midfield options and no plans for the club to strengthen that department, Abdelli is expected to remain an important part of Marseille’s plans.
