Gourcuff Names Algeria Squad for AFCON Qualifier Against Seychelles
Algeria head coach Christian Gourcuff has unveiled a 23-man squad to face Seychelles on Saturday, June 13, in the opening match of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. The Frenchman’s list features a mix of returning players, fresh faces, and a few surprise selections as the Fennecs aim to begin their qualification campaign on a strong note.
One of the notable decisions is the inclusion of Sofiane Khedaira as backup goalkeeper ahead of Si Mohamed Cédric. In defence, Club Africain’s Hichem Belkaroui earns his first call-up to the national team, with Gourcuff identifying him as a potential solution in central defence—an area he described as a “worksite” in need of attention before the Seychelles encounter.
The squad also sees the return of Watford midfielder Adlène Guedioura, who was recalled at the expense of Mehdi Lacen. Lacen is expected to undergo surgery during the summer. Guedioura, who played a key role in Watford’s promotion to the English Premier League, has been rewarded for his strong end-of-season performances.
“Guedioura had an excellent end to the season with Watford and deserves to return to the team,” Gourcuff told reporters at a press conference in Algiers. “As for Belkaroui, he offers new possibilities for the centre of defence, where we need depth and stability.”
Midfielder Ryad Boudebouz also rejoins the squad after missing the March training camp in Qatar due to injury. Mohamed Chennihi earns a recall after impressing in that same camp.
“This list is not final,” Gourcuff added. “I revealed it earlier than usual so that players could prepare for the first training camp [May 30 to June 4], but it could be revised in case of injuries or other unforeseen events.”
Algeria, who are among the favourites to qualify for the 2017 AFCON, are grouped with Seychelles, Ethiopia, and Malawi. The Fennecs will be aiming to top the group and continue their strong continental form after reaching the Round of 16 at the 2015 tournament and the knockout stage of the 2014 World Cup.
The upcoming match against Seychelles will be held on home soil, offering Algeria the chance to set the tone for their qualifying campaign in front of their fans.
