Asselah Grateful for Algeria Call-Up, Warns Against Underestimating Opponents
CR Belouizdad goalkeeper Malik Asselah has expressed his delight after being named in Algeria’s squad for their upcoming Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Seychelles on June 13.
The call-up comes as a reward for Asselah’s consistent performances this season in Ligue 1, and marks a return to the national setup just months after joining CRB.
“Of course, it’s always a source of pride to receive a national team call-up,” Asselah told concours.dz. “I was honoured to learn that I’ll be part of the next training camp. It shows the coach still trusts me, and I’m very happy. Just a few months after joining CRB, I’m back with the Fennecs. I’ll do my best to live up to this trust.”
Algeria, who top Africa’s FIFA rankings, have been drawn into a relatively favourable group for the 2017 AFCON qualifiers, alongside Seychelles, Ethiopia, and Malawi. However, Asselah urged caution, warning against any complacency.
“People might think the group is easy, but we expect difficult matches,” he said. “All African teams now have players in Europe. We mustn’t underestimate any opponent and need to remain vigilant throughout.”
With Algeria eyeing a dominant campaign in the qualifiers, Asselah’s experience and level-headed approach may prove valuable as the Fennecs begin their road to the 2017 tournament.
