Algeria goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea ruled out of World Cup after injury
Algeria international goalkeeper Anthony Mandrea will miss the World Cup after suffering a serious shoulder injury, with SM Caen coach Gaël Clichy confirming his withdrawal ahead of the tournament.
The 29-year-old’s season has been abruptly brought to an end following an incident in training on April 13, which required emergency attention and hospitalisation. Medical examinations quickly revealed a dislocated shoulder, with surgery scheduled for April 29.
The injury has ruled him out of action for the remainder of the campaign and ended any lingering hopes of featuring for Algeria at the World Cup.
Mandrea had been part of the national team’s recent preparations, but uncertainty over his fitness has now been resolved.
Speaking at a pre-match press conference, Clichy confirmed the extent of the setback and its consequences for the goalkeeper’s international ambitions.
“ Anthony Mandrea has to have surgery on Wednesday; his season is over. He’s out of the World Cup. He’s accepted it, in a way; there’s not much to be done.
I’m a very positive person, so I told him that when some doors close, sometimes others will open later. Of course, it’s always disappointing. ”
The coach acknowledged the scale of the disappointment for Mandrea, while also encouraging him to focus on his recovery and long-term prospects in the game.
“ Personally, I played in perhaps the darkest World Cup in the history of the French national team, but I would sign up to experience it again if offered, that’s how much it means to a player.
I can only be disappointed for him, because I know what he’s missing out on. But there are great things he can do, he’s young. If he chooses the right club in the future, if he performs well, he can still win two more World Cups. ”
Mandrea’s absence represents a significant setback both for the player and for Algeria, who must now reassess their options in goal ahead of the tournament.
The timing of the injury, so close to the World Cup, has made the situation particularly difficult.
For the goalkeeper, the immediate focus will be on undergoing surgery and beginning his recovery, with hopes of returning to action in the future.
Despite the disappointment, there remains optimism that he can rebuild and continue his international career beyond this setback.
