Algeria faces uncertainty ahead of CHAN 2025 amid Coaching void

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has officially scheduled the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for February 1 to 18, 2025, across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. This decision was confirmed during the Executive Committee meeting in Nairobi, quelling rumors that the tournament would be abandoned following the successful Algerian edition in 2023.

However, Algeria finds itself in a precarious situation as preparations for the tournament appear to be stalled.

Despite reaching the CHAN final in February 2023, where they narrowly missed out on the title after a penalty shootout against Senegal, Algeria currently lacks a national team selection or a technical staff to prepare for the upcoming qualifiers.

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) announced in June that it would soon appoint a new coaching team to lay the groundwork for CHAN 2025.

Yet, three months have passed with no progress.

With the national championship set to commence at the end of the week, there is still no sign of a coaching staff, training program, or strategic plan to guide the team toward the final phase of the tournament.

This delay has raised concerns about the FAF’s apparent lack of foresight and planning.

The National Technical Directorate (DTN) and its head, Ameur Mansoul, have come under scrutiny for their inaction.

Since the departure of former head coach Madjid Bougherra and his team in September 2023, after the expiration of their contracts, the FAF under Walid Sadi has left the national A’ team in limbo.

This lack of preparation is alarming, especially considering the team’s strong performance in the 2023 edition, where they remained undefeated and did not concede a single goal until the final.

CHAN 2025 will serve as a critical rehearsal for Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania, as these countries are set to co-host the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN) in 2027.

Each nation will provide two stadiums for the competition, marking an important milestone in their football infrastructure development.

Qualifiers for the tournament will take place between October and December 2024, as announced by Seidou Mbombo Njoya, President of the CHAN Organising Committee, on the sidelines of the Nairobi meeting.

For Algeria, the clock is ticking. The FAF’s current inertia contrasts sharply with the meticulous planning seen under previous leadership.

Bougherra and his staff were appointed well in advance, nearly two years before the final phase of CHAN 2023, ensuring a thorough preparation process.

Algeria’s future in CHAN 2025 hangs in the balance.

The FAF must act swiftly to avoid squandering the foundation laid by the previous coaching staff and to ensure that the national team is adequately prepared for the upcoming tournament.
