Algeria eyes consecutive title as coach Bougherra sets sights on 2025 Arab Cup victory
Algeria’s head coach Madjid Bougherra has made no secret of his ambitions for the 2025 Arab Cup, declaring that only a second consecutive title will satisfy the reigning champions.
The tournament, which will take place in Qatar from 1 to 18 December, will see the North African nation attempt to defend the crown they secured in 2021.
Speaking to Qatari media shortly after the group stage draw on Sunday, Bougherra was unequivocal about Algeria’s mission: “The objective is clear: to win a second consecutive Arab Cup.”
The 41-year-old tactician, who led Algeria’s locally-based squad to their maiden Arab Cup triumph four years ago, is well aware that the road to another title will not be straightforward.
Despite the confidence, Bougherra acknowledged the heightened expectations and challenges his side now faces.
“It will be more complicated than last time,” he admitted. “Being champions puts a target on our backs. Every team will come after us with greater intensity.”
Algeria’s victory in 2021 remains a standout moment in the nation’s football history, especially as the competition was held under the auspices of FIFA for the first time.
The team, composed primarily of domestic league players and some from regional leagues, managed to lift the trophy after a series of gritty performances, culminating in a dramatic final win.
As coach of Algeria’s A’ national team — a side composed of players active in domestic competitions — Bougherra faces the dual challenge of maintaining the competitive edge while working within the constraints of local talent.
He has been credited with instilling discipline, unity, and a strong tactical identity in the squad, which were all key to the 2021 success.
However, Bougherra emphasized that this year’s edition would be contested in a much more competitive environment.
With every participating nation now alert to Algeria’s strength and tactical organisation, the Greens will need to be even more prepared.
“Our league status makes us vulnerable in some ways,” he explained. “Other teams will see us as the benchmark and will raise their level. That’s why we must prepare meticulously and avoid complacency.”
The upcoming Arab Cup is expected to serve as a crucial platform for showcasing regional talent, and Algeria will likely rely on a blend of experience and youth to navigate the tournament.
With Bougherra’s strategic guidance and the memory of their previous triumph still fresh, the defending champions are preparing to embrace the pressure that comes with being favourites.
There is also a sense of national pride driving Algeria’s pursuit of another title. Success in regional competitions such as the Arab Cup not only enhances the reputation of local players but also strengthens the domestic football structure by increasing international exposure.
While many will look to Algeria as the team to beat in Qatar, Bougherra is determined to channel that pressure into performance. The road to back-to-back Arab Cup titles begins with preparation, focus, and the unwavering belief that history can repeat itself.
“We’re under no illusions,” Bougherra concluded. “It will be a fight from start to finish. But we’re ready for that fight.”
