Algeria consider Spanish coaches as uncertainty surrounds Vladimir Petkovic

The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) is reportedly considering Spanish coaches as potential successors to Vladimir Petkovic should the national team’s head coach leave his position.

Although Petkovic remains under contract and no decision has been announced regarding his future, reports suggest the federation has begun evaluating possible alternatives as uncertainty continues over the direction of the Fennecs.

According to journalist Imad Mostefai, the FAF’s preference would be to appoint a Spanish coach if a managerial change becomes necessary.

Journalist Yassine Maaloumi has also claimed that three internationally recognised Spanish coaches are currently among the candidates being considered by the federation, although no identities have been disclosed.

Despite the growing speculation, there has been no confirmation that discussions have progressed beyond the initial stage, while no formal negotiations have been reported with any potential candidate.

Equally, there has been no official indication that Petkovic’s departure is imminent.

The Swiss coach remains under contract with Algeria, and any decision regarding his future is expected to be influenced by several factors, including the financial implications of ending his agreement.

Reports also suggest the federation is reviewing the structure of the national team’s technical staff, with changes either planned or already under consideration.

Those developments have contributed to increasing speculation over Petkovic’s long-term position, although no official announcement has been made.

Interest in Spanish coaching expertise comes at a time when Spain has strengthened its reputation on the international stage.

After winning the 2026 FIFA World Cup, just two years after lifting the UEFA European Championship, Spanish football has once again become a reference point for its style of play, player development and coaching philosophy.

That recent success has naturally increased the appeal of Spanish coaches for national associations seeking to reshape their footballing projects.

However, while supporters may dream of high-profile names such as Pep Guardiola or Xavi Hernández, the report suggests such appointments would be financially unrealistic for the Algerian federation unless exceptional financial backing became available.

Instead, the three unnamed coaches reportedly under consideration are believed to have strong international reputations while remaining more attainable targets.

Algeria has previously turned to Spanish coaching expertise.

In 2017, Lucas Alcaraz succeeded Georges Leekens as head coach of the national team.

His spell in charge proved brief, lasting only five matches, during which he recorded two victories and three defeats before being dismissed after Algeria failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

Rabah Madjer subsequently replaced him.

Nearly a decade later, reports suggest the FAF could once again look towards Spain if it decides to make a managerial change.

For now, however, the focus remains on Petkovic, whose future has yet to be resolved.

Until the federation makes a formal decision, any discussion surrounding potential replacements remains speculative, with the reported shortlist dependent on whether the current head coach ultimately leaves his role.
