Algeria have climbed six places to 28th in the latest FIFA world rankings, released on Monday, following their run to the quarter-finals of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

The rise marks a positive outcome for the Greens after an encouraging campaign at the continental tournament, where they were eliminated by Nigeria with a 2-0 defeat in the last eight.

Despite that setback, Algeria’s overall performances during the competition contributed significantly to their improved global standing.

Algeria enjoyed a flawless group stage, recording three victories from three matches.

They opened their campaign with a convincing 3-0 win over Sudan, followed by a narrow 1-0 success against Burkina Faso, before completing the group phase with a 3-1 victory against Equatorial Guinea.

Those results ensured qualification for the knockout stages with maximum points.

In the round of 16, the Algerians overcame DR Congo in a closely contested encounter, securing a 1-0 victory after extra time to progress to the quarter-finals.

Their tournament came to an end against Nigeria, but the consistency shown across the competition was reflected in the updated rankings.

On the African continent, Algeria now sit fourth with 1,560.91 points, placing them ahead of Egypt, who are ranked 31st globally, and the 2024 African champions Ivory Coast, who occupy 42nd place.

The most notable climb among African sides came from Cameroon, who moved up 12 positions to reach 45th in the world.

Newly crowned African champions Senegal also enjoyed a significant boost, rising seven places to 12th after their extra-time victory over host nation Morocco in the final.

Morocco, despite missing out on the title, remain Africa’s highest-ranked side.

At the summit of the global standings, Spain retain top spot, with Argentina and France completing the leading trio. Croatia have dropped out of the world’s top 10 and now sit 11th.

Looking ahead, Algeria’s opponents at the 2026 World Cup are also positioned across the rankings.

Austria are ranked 24th, while Jordan occupy 64th place, providing a varied level of opposition on the global scale.

The next edition of the FIFA rankings is scheduled for release on Wednesday, 1 April, when further movement is expected following upcoming international fixtures.
