Christian Gourcuff Officially Begins Tenure as Algeria Coach
Christian Gourcuff officially assumed his role as head coach of the Algerian national football team on Monday, signing his contract at the headquarters of the Algerian Football Federation (FAF).
The experienced French manager, who had been appointed a few weeks prior, formalized his commitment with a contract outlining clear objectives, including the upcoming African Cup of Nations tournaments in 2015 and 2017, as well as the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
According to the FAF’s official statement, Gourcuff will commence his duties with a staff meeting scheduled for Tuesday, where he will meet with the entire national team’s coaching and support personnel.
Gourcuff succeeds Vahid Halilhodzic, who led Algeria to a historic round of 16 appearance at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil—their best-ever performance on football’s biggest stage.
The former Lorient coach’s primary task will be to build on this success by guiding the Fennecs to at least the semi-finals of the 2015 African Cup of Nations, set to take place in Morocco.
His appointment signals a new phase for Algerian football, with hopes high among fans and officials that Gourcuff’s tactical expertise and experience will propel the team to further continental and global success.
