The Algerian Football Federation (FAF) has formally contested sanctions handed down by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) following the controversial Nigeria-Algeria quarter-final at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

CAF imposed a $100,000 fine on Algeria, with two players facing suspensions that will apply during the 2027 AFCON qualifiers: goalkeeper Luca Zidane received a two-match ban, while Rafik Belghali was suspended for four matches, two of which were suspended.

In response, the FAF has signalled its intention to appeal, but officials are planning a more aggressive strategy than the standard CAF procedure, which allows an automatic appeal within 48 hours of notification.

“The Algerian Football Federation has requested that CAF provide the legal basis for the sanctions within 72 hours,” reported journalist Brahim Hanifi, citing sources close to the FAF. The deadline for CAF’s response is set for Friday midnight.

The FAF’s move is seen as a precursor to taking the case to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) in Lausanne.

Officials argue that several sanctions, including a $50,000 fine for “offensive and abusive gestures” — specifically, supporters displaying banknotes to match referees — lack clear legal justification.

“This step is essential before an appeal to CAS,” said FAF sources. “We want full transparency on the regulations CAF claims were violated.”

The federation’s assertive approach reflects a broader pattern of legal challenges in recent African football, reminiscent of the dispute over RS Berkane’s controversial jerseys.

Algeria’s football authorities are determined to defend what they view as questionable or unjust sanctions, signalling a willingness to escalate the matter through international sporting legal channels if necessary.

CAF has yet to comment on the FAF’s request, and the unfolding legal proceedings could have significant implications for future disciplinary cases in African football.
