Mohamed Bachir Belloumi strengthens Algeria claim

Mohamed Bachir Belloumi has strengthened his case for a regular place in Algeria’s attack after scoring in consecutive matches and increasing the competition to succeed Riyad Mahrez on the right wing.

The Hull City winger scored against Burundi before finding the net again in Tuesday’s 2-1 victory over Niger. His latest goal came from a direct free-kick, adding another highlight to an international break in which he has emerged as one of Algeria’s most influential attacking players.

Belloumi entered the match against Niger in the first half after Ibrahim Maza was forced off with an injury. His introduction provided Algeria with greater attacking energy after a subdued start.

The 24-year-old had already made an impact against Burundi, scoring in the 2-2 draw. He followed that performance with another confident display against Niger, showing greater intent in the final third and offering a creative threat that Algeria had lacked at times.

His return to form is particularly significant after a period disrupted by injuries and limited opportunities.

Belloumi has not always been a first choice despite his ability, but the two matches have given him an opportunity to change his position in the squad’s hierarchy.

He was also among the players who helped Algeria respond during the international break, alongside Adil Boulbina.

There were still areas for improvement. Belloumi missed a clear chance during the final 15 minutes against Niger, highlighting the need for greater consistency and efficiency if he is to establish himself as a regular starter.

That issue could become increasingly important for Algeria as they continue to search for a settled attacking line-up. With uncertainty also surrounding the centre-forward position, the contribution of the wide players in front of goal could prove important.

Belloumi’s recent performances have therefore strengthened his case. Although he has not yet secured a starting place, he has taken advantage of his opportunities and moved himself further into consideration.

However, the competition is far from over.

Anis Hadj Moussa remains a strong candidate to fill the role previously occupied by Mahrez. The Feyenoord winger was forced to leave Algeria’s training camp early after the opening match, but his qualities continue to make him an important option.

Hadj Moussa offers a different style to Belloumi. He is particularly comfortable in one-on-one situations and in tight areas, while Belloumi is more direct and tends to make runs behind the defence.

Algeria coach Brahim Hemdani therefore has two contrasting options on the right side as he prepares for the next stage of the team’s campaign.

With a double-header against Togo approaching, the competition between the two players could become even more important.

The search for Mahrez’s successor is not yet settled, but Belloumi has made sure his name is firmly part of the conversation.

After taking his opportunity during the latest international break, the next challenge will be for Hadj Moussa to respond when he returns to the squad.
