Algeria backs Patrice Motsepe’s bid for second term as CAF president
Algeria has officially declared its support for South African Patrice Motsepe’s bid for a second term as president of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), ahead of the organization’s upcoming elections set for March 12, 2025, in Cairo.
The decision to endorse Motsepe highlights the strong diplomatic ties between Algeria and South Africa, particularly on key African issues.
Alongside this endorsement, Algerian Football Federation president Walid Sadi has received approval from the Algerian government to run for a seat on CAF’s executive committee, representing North Africa.
The move underscores Algeria’s intent to secure a larger role within the continent’s football governing body.
“The support Algeria offers to Motsepe reflects the unity in our regional policies and the shared vision we hold with South Africa on African matters,” said a representative from the Algerian sports administration.
This backing is expected to strengthen Motsepe’s re-election bid, particularly if Egyptian candidate Hani Abu Raida decides not to enter the race, further boosting Motsepe’s chances.
Motsepe, who has led CAF since March 2021, has focused on implementing reforms within African football to elevate the sport’s profile both regionally and internationally.
Algeria’s support may serve as a crucial endorsement, especially as CAF continues to navigate complex issues affecting the development of football across the continent.
