Nabil Fékir Caught Between France and Algeria — Decision Still Pending
Rising Olympique Lyonnais star Nabil Fékir continues to shine in Ligue 1, but off the pitch, a major decision looms over his international future: France or Algeria?
Both the French national team (Les Bleus) and the Algerian Fennecs are keen to secure the services of the 21-year-old attacking midfielder, who holds dual nationality. Fékir’s standout performances this season have caught the attention of national selectors and sparked debate over which country he should represent.
While Fékir remains undecided publicly, Lyon coach Hubert Fournier and club president Jean-Michel Aulas have not hidden their preference: they want him to take his time and aim for the French team.
“Would I recommend him for the national team? Yes, absolutely,” Aulas told RMC. “He needs to play out his season before choosing. If we end up playing in the Champions League, that would be an exceptional showcase that could open doors with Les Bleus. He can qualify for France, and that’s my opinion.”
Fékir is expected to maintain the current status quo until June, giving himself the chance to complete the season before announcing his international decision. For now, fans in both Algeria and France will have to wait and watch one of Europe’s most promising young talents evolve — and hope he chooses their colors.
