Algeria arrive in Zanzibar ahead of CHAN quarter-final showdown with Sudan

Algeria’s home-based national side has landed in Zanzibar to continue their African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign, where they will meet Sudan in the quarter-finals this Saturday, 23 August, at 20:00 local time (18:00 Algerian time).

The Algerian delegation touched down at Abeid Amani Karume International Airport on Wednesday evening at 23:40 local time, having travelled from Nairobi.

The squad was received by officials from the Algerian Embassy in Tanzania before heading to their base camp to recover from the journey. Training is set to resume on Thursday evening as preparations intensify for the decisive fixture.

The arrival marks Algeria’s third stop in as many host cities during this year’s tournament. The Greens opened their campaign in Kampala, Uganda, where they played three group matches, before moving to Nairobi, Kenya, for their round-of-16 clash against Niger. They now face Sudan in Zanzibar as the competition enters its critical stages.

Head coach Madjid Bougherra will look to maintain his side’s momentum as Algeria continue their push for a place in the last four.

His players, including captain Bouhalfaya, are expected to adjust quickly to their new surroundings, with recovery sessions already factored into their schedule before Saturday’s clash.

The fixture against Sudan represents another stern test for the North Africans, who have shown resilience throughout the group stage and knockout phases.

Their journey has demanded frequent travel across East Africa, testing both their endurance and adaptability. With another potential trip to Dar es Salaam awaiting them should they advance to the semi-finals, Bougherra’s men are well aware of the logistical demands that accompany their title ambitions.

Sudan, meanwhile, enter the quarter-final with confidence, having also navigated their way through the earlier rounds with determination. Their ability to challenge Algeria will be closely watched, with Saturday’s game promising to be one of the most competitive ties of the round.

For Algeria, the tournament so far has highlighted the depth of their domestic squad, with several players rising to the occasion under pressure.

The clash in Zanzibar now offers them an opportunity to further assert their credentials and secure a place among the final four teams of CHAN 2025.

As anticipation builds ahead of Saturday night’s fixture, both sides are sharpening their preparations for what is expected to be a fiercely contested quarter-final. With a semi-final spot on the line, the match could prove defining for either team’s aspirations in this year’s competition.
