Algerian international referee Djamel Haimoudi was awarded the 2012 Arab Golden Whistle. The award was based on a survey conducted by the sports magazine El Hadath Erriyadhi, in which several Arab experts from Asia and Africa participated. Djamel Haimoudi, who was also named the best referee of the year 2012 by the Confederation of African Football, officiated the opening match and the final of the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations held in South Africa. He is also on the shortlist of referees for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
