Algeria and Togo make winning starts as Burkina Faso held in Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying

The first round of Africa Cup of Nations 2027 qualifying continued on Friday with 14 matches, as Algeria and Togo claimed victories while Burkina Faso were held to a draw by Benin.

Togo began their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win against Burundi, while Algeria defeated Zambia 3-1. Burkina Faso were held to a 1-1 draw by Benin in another all-West African contest.

Senegal were also unable to take three points, drawing 1-1 with Mozambique in Patrick Vieira’s first qualifying match in charge. The result was among three draws on the day, with Egypt held 0-0 by Angola.

Guinea-Bissau recorded one of the day’s more notable victories, winning 2-0 away to Tanzania. Sudan beat Ethiopia 1-0, while Niger edged Lesotho 2-1.

Malawi came from the same group of closely contested matches to beat South Sudan 2-1. Gambia also won by that scoreline against Somalia, and Nigeria defeated Madagascar 2-1.

Rwanda produced a 3-1 victory over Liberia, while Morocco beat Gabon 2-0. Mali also won 3-1, against Cape Verde.
