Alfred Gomis, the Senegalese international goalkeeper, has secured a move to Serie B, marking a new chapter in his career after an extended period on the sidelines at Stade Rennais.

Gomis, 30, had fallen out of favor at the French club and was not part of their plans for the past two seasons. After being purchased for €10 million from Dijon, his tenure at Stade Rennais was marked by limited opportunities.

In the second half of the 2022-2023 season, he was loaned to Como in Italy. Subsequently, he spent the entire past season on the bench at FC Lorient, unable to break into the starting lineup.

Gomis’s departure from Stade Rennais signifies a return to Italy, a country where he has previously played for several clubs, including Crotone, SPAL, and Salernitana.

Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio reported that Stade Rennais will release Gomis from his remaining one-year contract, allowing him to join Palermo in Serie B.

The goalkeeper has successfully passed his medical examination and is set to sign a two-year contract with an optional third year.

Gomis’s career has been a roller-coaster ride. Born in Ziguinchor, Senegal, he moved to Italy at a young age and began his professional career with Torino.

His performances in Serie B and Serie A drew attention, leading to his move to France. However, his time in Ligue 1 was marred by inconsistent form and a lack of playing time, culminating in his recent loans.

At Como, Gomis showed glimpses of his potential, reminding fans and scouts alike of his abilities. However, a permanent move did not materialize, and he returned to Stade Rennais, only to find himself surplus to requirements.

Joining Palermo offers Gomis a fresh start and an opportunity to revive his career. Palermo, aiming for promotion to Serie A, sees Gomis as a crucial addition to their squad.

His experience in both Italian and French leagues is expected to provide stability and leadership at the back.

Gomis expressed his excitement about the move: “I am thrilled to join Palermo and start this new chapter in my career.

The club’s ambitions align with my own, and I am ready to give my best to help achieve our goals.”

As Gomis prepares to don the Palermo jersey, he leaves behind a mixed legacy at Stade Rennais.

While his time in Brittany did not unfold as planned, his resilience and determination have led him back to a competitive league where he can showcase his talent.

Palermo supporters will be eager to see how Gomis integrates into the team and contributes to their quest for promotion.

For Gomis, this move is more than just a change of clubs; it’s a chance to reignite his career and prove his worth on the field.

In conclusion, Alfred Gomis’s transfer to Palermo is a significant step for the goalkeeper, offering him a platform to return to regular first-team football and to once again demonstrate the skills that earned him international recognition.

As he embarks on this new journey, both Gomis and Palermo will hope for a successful partnership that leads to mutual achievements and, ideally, a return to Serie A.
