Following Cameroon’s disappointing exit from the AFCON 2023 tournament in the round of 16 against Nigeria, former footballer Alexandre Song has once again voiced concerns regarding the operational freedom of the national team’s technical staff.

The Indomitable Lions faced a 2-0 defeat against Nigeria, leaving a bitter taste for many former stars of Cameroonian football.

In the aftermath of the elimination, questions have been raised about the coaching strategies employed by Rigobert Song and the overall functioning of the Cameroonian Football Federation.

In a recent appearance on a Cameroonian sports program, Alexandre Song expressed his reservations about the extent to which the technical staff can operate independently.

He posed critical questions about the players’ mental freedom and suggested that without mental freedom, physical performance would be compromised.

“Do the technical staff have their hands free? Are the players free? If mentally you are not free, the body does not follow.

We left players like Choupo Moting, Martin Hongla, and Nsame who could contribute. I have nothing against the young people we took, but we saw that they had difficulties,” Song remarked during the television discussion.

The comments from Alexandre Song shed light on the challenges faced by the Cameroonian national team and raise important questions about the decision-making processes, player selections, and the overall environment within the team.

As discussions continue within the football community, Song’s insights contribute to the ongoing dialogue about the future and improvement of Cameroon’s football landscape.
