Alexandre Santos admits Sundowns’ strength ahead of CAF Champions League final showdown
AS FAR Rabat head coach Alexandre Santos has conceded that Mamelodi Sundowns pose a formidable challenge ahead of their CAF Champions League final clash, but insists his side is fully prepared to compete.
The Moroccan outfit will meet the South African champions over two legs, with the first leg set for 17 May in Tshwane before the return fixture in Rabat on 24 May.
Sundowns enter the final widely regarded as one of the continent’s most dominant sides in recent years, underpinned by sustained performances at the highest level of African club football.
Both teams have previously lifted the continental crown, with Sundowns winning the title in 2016, while AS FAR were champions in 1985.
Miguel Cardoso’s side arrive in another final after falling short against Pyramids FC in last season’s decider, reinforcing their consistency on the continental stage.
Santos acknowledged the magnitude of the challenge, stressing that preparations have been thorough both tactically and mentally as his team gears up for the high-stakes encounter.
“The preparations are going well in a positive atmosphere and with great focus from all components of the team,” he told CAFOnline.com.
He added that his players fully understand the importance of the occasion and are working to ensure they are ready in all departments.
Santos also highlighted Sundowns’ tactical discipline, quick ball circulation, and vast experience as key threats, while insisting AS FAR possess the quality and mentality to compete strongly.
“We are focusing on tactical discipline, minimizing mistakes, and capitalizing on the opportunities that come our way,” he said. “We are also working extensively on the mental aspect so that the players enter the match with confidence and a strong character.”
He concluded that despite Sundowns’ strengths, his side will approach the final with belief and determination to secure a positive result.
