Former England striker Teddy Sheringham believes Alexander Isak could yet become a decisive figure in Liverpool’s pursuit of Premier League glory despite enduring a challenging first season at Anfield following his record-breaking move from Newcastle United.

The Swedish international of Eritrean heritage arrived on Merseyside amid huge expectations after Liverpool paid a British-record fee reportedly worth £125 million.

However, injuries and fitness issues prevented the striker from making the immediate impact many supporters had anticipated.

Sheringham backs Isak revival

Despite those setbacks, Sheringham remains convinced that Isak possesses the quality to transform Liverpool’s fortunes if he can regain the form that established him as one of Europe’s most feared forwards during his time at Newcastle.

“Alexander Isak could have a massive say on the Premier League next season,” Sheringham said.

The former Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur striker highlighted the attacking qualities that made Isak such a coveted talent before his move to Anfield, insisting the 26-year-old still has the ability to influence the title race.

“I loved him when he was playing for Newcastle United, firing on all cylinders. He’s definitely a player who can make the difference but he’s had a tough year.”

World Cup offers chance to rebuild

Sheringham pointed to Isak’s injury struggles as a major factor behind his difficult campaign, noting that such setbacks can significantly affect a player’s rhythm and confidence.

Rather than entering a conventional pre-season programme, Isak is currently representing Sweden at the World Cup, something Sheringham believes could prove beneficial ahead of the new domestic campaign.

“Injuries like that really do set you back but hopefully he’ll come into next season in good form.”

The former England forward suggested the extended period of competitive football this summer could help Isak regain sharpness and fitness before Liverpool return to Premier League action.

Liverpool fans waiting for response

With expectations remaining high around one of the most expensive signings in football history, attention will be firmly fixed on how Isak responds next season.

Sheringham believes the striker has sufficient time to rediscover his best form before Liverpool’s title challenge gathers momentum and is confident supporters will eventually see the player who dazzled in black and white on Tyneside.

“He has a long time to get himself back on track and in shape for Liverpool this summer and hopefully for his sake he’ll be back to the player that he was for Newcastle. That’s what the Liverpool fans want to see.”
