Alex Iwobi equals Mohamed Salah’s Premier League record as Fulham edge Coventry City

Nigeria international Alex Iwobi has drawn level with Mohamed Salah as the joint-second most-capped African player in Premier League history after featuring in Fulham’s 1-0 victory over Coventry City on Saturday.

The midfielder made his 328th appearance in England’s top flight as Fulham secured all three points at the expense of Coventry, moving within 25 games of the record held by former Manchester City and Arsenal defender Kolo Toure.

Iwobi reached the milestone during a hard-fought contest settled by Oscar Bobb’s 80th-minute strike, giving the London side a narrow victory and adding another landmark to the Nigerian’s career in English football.

Iwobi joins Salah in Premier League history

The 328 appearances place Iwobi alongside Liverpool forward Salah, who has also featured 328 times in the competition.

However, the pair have accumulated different amounts of playing time. Salah has logged 26,785 minutes in the Premier League, compared with Iwobi’s 22,898 minutes.

The former Arsenal academy graduate now has an opportunity to move into outright second place when Fulham travel to Aston Villa for their next league fixture, provided he features in the encounter.

Toure remains the African player with the most Premier League appearances, having made 353 outings during his career.

Iwobi’s latest achievement highlights his longevity in English football, having progressed from his early years at Arsenal to spells at Everton and Fulham, where he has continued to establish himself as an important midfield option.

The Nigeria international’s consistency has helped him build an impressive appearance record in a competition that has featured several of Africa’s most prominent footballers.

Midfielder contributes in Fulham’s narrow win

Iwobi played 73 minutes against Coventry before making way for Cesar Palacios as Fulham searched for a breakthrough in a closely contested encounter.

The midfielder recorded 60 touches and completed 51 passes, registering an impressive passing accuracy of 86.3 per cent.

He also created two key passes and delivered three crosses, demonstrating his involvement in Fulham’s attempts to unlock Coventry’s defence.

Iwobi managed one shot during his time on the pitch and contributed defensively with a tackle as Fulham worked to gain control of the contest.

Although he did not get on the scoresheet, his involvement in midfield helped the hosts maintain their attacking threat before Bobb produced the decisive moment late in the match.

Bobb’s 80th-minute goal proved enough to separate the sides, ensuring Fulham claimed a valuable victory after a competitive afternoon against Frank Lampard’s Coventry City.

The result gave Fulham three points, with Iwobi’s personal milestone providing another positive talking point from the fixture.

Fulham look to build momentum

Fulham occupy 13th place in the Premier League standings after collecting eight points from their opening eight matches.

The victory over Coventry offers the London club an opportunity to build momentum as they prepare for their next assignment away to Aston Villa.

For Iwobi, that fixture could bring another significant moment in his Premier League career. An appearance would take him to 329 games and move him clear of Salah into second place among African players with the most outings in the competition.

With Toure’s record of 353 appearances still ahead of him, the Nigerian will have further milestones to pursue as the season progresses.

For now, Iwobi’s place alongside Salah underlines his sustained presence in the Premier League and his development into one of Nigeria’s most experienced players in English football.
