Alan Shearer has tipped Thomas Partey to play a pivotal role in Arsenal’s hopes of overturning a 1-0 deficit against Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final.
Partey, who was suspended for the first leg, is expected to return for the crucial clash at the Parc des Princes, and Shearer believes his presence could make all the difference.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, the former England striker argued that Partey’s absence was a significant factor in Arsenal’s subdued performance in Paris.
According to Shearer, the opening leg may well have ended in a goalless draw had the Ghanaian midfielder been on the pitch. Ousmane Dembélé’s early strike was enough to give PSG the advantage, but Shearer is confident that Partey’s defensive positioning and awareness would have prevented the goal.
When asked by host Gary Lineker what Arsenal need to reach the Champions League final, Shearer was unequivocal: “Thomas Partey. That’s the key.
His return changes everything.” He elaborated that Partey would have occupied the space Dembélé exploited in the first leg, shutting down PSG’s attacking transition and providing the kind of cover Arsenal sorely missed.
Mikel Arteta’s side had impressed in the quarter-finals, particularly in their performance against Real Madrid, but looked off pace against the French champions.
Shearer attributed this in part to the lack of midfield control early in the match, noting that Arsenal’s pressing was disjointed and allowed PSG to pass comfortably through central areas.
“PSG were allowed far too much time between the lines,” Shearer added. “That wouldn’t have happened with Partey on the pitch. He snuffs out danger, reads the game brilliantly and gives the team a platform to play.”
Partey has been a mainstay in Arsenal’s midfield this season, making 47 appearances across all competitions. Known for his tactical discipline and ability to disrupt opposition play, the Ghana international has also chipped in with four goals and three assists.
Shearer’s analysis points to Partey’s all-round contribution, not just as a defensive anchor but as a calming presence capable of dictating tempo and enabling Arsenal’s creative players to operate more freely.
With the Gunners trailing by a single goal, the second leg presents a formidable challenge. PSG will have the advantage of home support at the Parc des Princes, and Arsenal will need a near-flawless performance to book their place in the final.
But Shearer believes that Partey’s inclusion could be the spark Arsenal need to shift the balance of the tie.
“His return brings balance, leadership and experience in the middle of the park. If Arsenal are going to do this, he has to be at the heart of it,” Shearer concluded.
As anticipation builds ahead of the second leg, all eyes will be on Thomas Partey to see if he can live up to the expectations and help steer Arsenal to their first Champions League final in nearly two decades.
