Alain Gouaméné has expressed strong support for Cameroonian international André Onana, insisting the Manchester United goalkeeper remains one of the best in the world despite enduring a challenging season at club level.
The former Ivorian international and 1992 Africa Cup of Nations champion made his comments in an interview where he backed Onana to stay at Old Trafford and prove his worth after a turbulent campaign.
Manchester United finished a disappointing 15th in the Premier League, sparking speculation over the futures of several key players, including the 28-year-old shot-stopper.
Gouaméné, however, believes Onana still has an important role to play in helping United restore their reputation. “Personally, I want Onana to stay at Manchester United,” he stated. “Yes, he had a difficult season at his club.
Manchester United disappointed by finishing fifteenth in the Premier League, but I think the Red Devils want to regain their status.”
To do that, Gouaméné emphasised the need for stability in key positions. “You need a very good goalkeeper. And Onana is one of them,” he continued.
“He has a lot of qualities and I think he wants to stay in Manchester to show everyone that he is a very high-level player.”
Gouaméné went on to praise Onana’s mental strength and commitment to his craft. “There’s no doubt about it for me. He’s one of the best in the world,” he said.
“We’re talking about a goalkeeper who played for Ajax Amsterdam and Inter Milan and now plays for Manchester United. He’s very professional, very focused.”
Onana’s career trajectory has seen him rise from the ranks of the Ajax academy to starring in the UEFA Champions League, before moving to Serie A side Inter Milan and later joining Manchester United in 2023.
His transfer to the English Premier League was seen as a major step, and while his first season has had its difficulties, Gouaméné insists the Cameroonian still has the tools to succeed at the highest level.
Currently under contract with Manchester United until June 2028, Onana remains a significant figure in the club’s plans. According to available figures, the goalkeeper is valued at €25 million and earns an annual salary of €7,326,777 at Old Trafford.
Despite United’s underwhelming season, Onana’s commitment to his national team and professionalism off the pitch have continued to earn him respect from prominent figures in African football.
His presence in goal for Cameroon remains undisputed, and many expect him to remain a central figure in United’s rebuild under their current management.
As speculation continues around the future of several Manchester United players, Gouaméné’s message is clear: Onana should be part of the club’s solution, not part of the problem.
The Ivorian legend’s remarks reflect a growing belief that with time and the right environment, the Cameroonian goalkeeper can reclaim the form that once made him one of Europe’s most sought-after talents.
