Al Masry stuns Zesco away In dramatic Confederation Cup win

Egyptian club Al Masry earned a massive 3-2 victory over Zambian hosts Zesco United in Ndola, taking control of Group D in the CAF Confederation Cup with a perfect six points from two matches.

The Port Said side had already started their campaign strongly by beating South Africa’s Kaizer Chiefs 2-1 at home, and this away win under Tunisian coach Nabil Kouki pushes them closer to the quarterfinals.

The match started at a frantic pace, with defender Mohamed Hashem heading Masry in front after just four minutes, before Zesco quickly replied through a powerful strike from Freddy following a defensive mix-up involving goalkeeper Mahmoud Hamdy. Masry then capitalized on a major mistake by the Zambian backline to restore their lead midway through the first half, and in the second period Algerian winger Abdelraheem Daghmoum added a crucial third goal that gave the visitors real belief. Zesco made several attacking substitutions and eventually pulled one back through Peter Musokoma late on, but Masry held their nerve to leave with all three points.

Kouki also used his bench smartly, introducing Karim Bambo along with forwards Kingsley Edoah and Mido Jaber to maintain pressure and help the team survive Zesco’s late surge. The result leaves Zamalek, who beat Zesco 1-0 in Cairo and sit on three points with a game in hand against Kaizer Chiefs, chasing Masry at the top of the group.

After the final whistle, the head of Masry’s delegation, Dr. Mohamed Moussa, expressed the club’s appreciation to Pyramids FC officials and staff in Zambia for attending the match in full numbers to support a fellow Egyptian representative in Africa, describing it as a gesture that reflects the strong relationship between the two clubs.

Masry’s latest result adds a fresh chapter to a growing Confederation Cup story that began in earnest in 2017, when the club first reached the group stage under Hossam Hassan. The Port Said side’s best run came in 2018, reaching the semi-finals before falling to AS Vita Club, and they have since remained regular contenders, making quarterfinal appearances in 2020 and 2022 against strong opponents like Morocco’s RS Berkane and Egypt’s Pyramids.

Even without a title yet, Masry has become one of Egypt’s most consistent clubs in this competition, behind giants Al Ahly and Zamalek, and this win in Zambia suggests another deep run could be on the way
