Al Ittihad’s new era put on trial by unbeaten Al Nassr

Al Ittihad face their toughest test of the season so far when they meet Al Nassr in the Roshn Saudi League on Saturday, with the pressure surrounding both clubs’ rebuilding projects intensified by Al Ahli’s early difficulties.

The two Jeddah clubs have entered the campaign in broadly similar circumstances. Both are attempting to refresh their squads, change several key personnel and begin a new chapter under different coaching arrangements.

However, their plans are being challenged by an issue that may prove more difficult than any opponent on the pitch: the limited patience of supporters and the media, who want to see immediate progress.

While Al Ahli and Al Ittihad have shown signs of uncertainty, Riyadh rivals Al Hilal and Al Nassr have appeared considerably more settled.

Al Hilal exposed Al Ahli’s weaknesses with a 3-0 victory, triggering strong criticism of Al Ahli’s administration, coaching staff and some players. The club also parted ways with its sporting director as it began reassessing and reorganising its project.

That experience has provided a warning for Al Ittihad ahead of their meeting with Al Nassr. Al Ahli began the season with major ambitions, but the defeat by Al Hilal raised questions that went beyond the scoreline. It highlighted concerns about the team’s identity, its overall performance and whether its players were ready to compete at the required level.

Those doubts quickly led to calls for changes across the club. The timing was particularly damaging, because new projects generally need time to develop an identity and establish a consistent style. Yet supporters are often less willing to wait when rival teams appear to be progressing with confidence.

Al Ittihad now face a similar challenge. They are also working through a rebuilding process, with a new coaching staff and new players, but the fixture against Al Nassr arrives at a moment when another setback could be costly. A poor result could prompt the same cycle of criticism that has already engulfed Al Ahli.

Al Nassr enter the Saudi Clasico in a markedly stronger position. They have won all their matches so far, are seeking to defend their title and have shown an ability to take advantage when their rivals drop points. A victory would therefore mean more than three additional points.

It would allow Al Nassr to continue putting pressure on Al Hilal at the top of the Roshn Saudi League while potentially pushing Al Ittihad into the same storm of scrutiny currently facing Al Ahli.

The pressure on Al Ittihad is also increased by comparison. Every win for Al Nassr and Al Hilal makes a disappointing result for either Jeddah side more visible. Each negative outcome is likely to prompt fresh questions about the value of the project and the decisions made before the season began.

Yet the match offers Al Ittihad an opportunity to change the narrative immediately. Victory would give them confidence and demonstrate that their new project can compete with the leading sides before it has reached full stability.

A win could also temporarily ease doubts about the team and some of its officials, giving the coaching staff greater room to work away from the daily pressure. Supporters are generally more prepared to show patience when positive results come in major matches.

Defeat, by contrast, could bring a harsher reaction. Al Ittihad may face renewed demands for changes among both administrative and technical figures, particularly as supporters have already begun questioning several decisions.

Saturday’s meeting is therefore about more than a contest between two major clubs. Al Nassr want to continue defending their title and close the gap on Al Hilal, while Al Ittihad must show that their new project can produce a competitive team now rather than after several years of development.

A win for Al Nassr could leave Al Ittihad experiencing the same “bitterness of Al Ahli” a heavy setback, mounting pressure from supporters and growing doubts about the direction of the project. An Al Ittihad victory, however, would give them the chance to answer all those questions in one evening.

The match may be the first genuine test of Al Ittihad supporters’ patience, but it could also provide the quickest way to earn it. Either Al Nassr will underline the current advantage held by the Riyadh clubs, or Al Ittihad will show that one major result can transform the balance of the season.
