Al Ittihad Alexandria sign Egyptian-Danish basketball player Sami Iraqi

Al Ittihad Alexandria have completed the signing of Sami Iraqi to strengthen their men’s basketball team ahead of next season.

Iraqi has agreed a two-year contract with the club and becomes the first officially announced addition to Al Ittihad Alexandria’s squad for the new campaign. The move brings in a player with experience of playing professionally in Europe, as the Egyptian club begin reshaping their roster.

Iraqi holds both Egyptian and Danish nationality. He previously spent time at Zamalek, where he played in the club’s youth ranks several years ago, before leaving Egypt to pursue a professional career in Europe.

His return to Egyptian basketball gives Al Ittihad Alexandria an addition who has experience of both the domestic game and European basketball. The club’s announcement makes him the first signing formally confirmed as part of its preparations for next season.

Al Ittihad Alexandria’s recruitment comes after a change in the coaching position. The club appointed Ahmed Omar as head coach several weeks ago, with Omar replacing Ashraf Tawfik.

The change followed Al Ittihad Alexandria’s defeat by Al Ahly in last season’s Egyptian league title contest. The result meant the Alexandria club ended the campaign without the league championship, and the appointment of Omar was followed by the first confirmed move of the summer in Iraqi.

The club have also reached an agreement with former Al Ahly player Malek Yasser. However, that deal has not yet been officially announced, so Iraqi remains the only new arrival confirmed by Al Ittihad Alexandria.

The two-year agreement underlines the club’s intention to strengthen the men’s team before the start of the next season. Iraqi’s Egyptian background, Danish nationality and previous spell in Europe form the main elements of his playing history as he returns to the country’s domestic competition.

Al Ittihad Alexandria have not provided further details about the financial terms of the contract or the exact timing of Iraqi’s arrival. The club’s announcement confirmed only that the player had signed for two seasons and would join the men’s basketball side.

The move also marks the first formal step in the club’s squad-building plans since Omar’s appointment. Further attention will now focus on whether the agreement with Yasser is made official, while the club continues its preparations after losing last season’s league title to Al Ahly.

For Iraqi, the transfer represents a return to a familiar national basketball environment after his earlier period with Zamalek and his subsequent European professional experience. He will now continue his career with Al Ittihad Alexandria under Omar, who was appointed to succeed Tawfik.
