Al-Hilal beat Mamelodi Sundowns to take control of CAF Champions League Group C
Al-Hilal strengthened their grip on Group C of the CAF Champions League with a 2-1 victory over Mamelodi Sundowns in the competition’s fourth round, moving the Sudanese side to the top of the table on eight points.
The result came after a tightly contested encounter in which Al-Hilal made the most of their chances in a decisive spell late in the first half, before withstanding sustained pressure from the South African champions after the break.
Mamelodi Sundowns, who began the round level on points with their opponents, slipped to second place with five points following the defeat.
The opening exchanges saw Sundowns enjoy the greater share of possession, patiently attempting to build from midfield and stretch the Sudanese defence.
In the ninth minute, Marcelo led a swift counter-attack into Al-Hilal’s half, but his cross was intercepted before it could reach a teammate. At the other end, Abdel Rahman tested the Sundowns defence with a shot that was deflected behind for a corner, though the opportunity came to nothing.
As the match settled into a competitive rhythm, chances remained scarce. Miguel combined neatly with Matthews in midfield to create another opening for Sundowns, but Al-Hilal’s back line stayed alert, closing down space and preventing a clear sight of goal. After half an hour, neither side had been able to break the deadlock.
The contest turned dramatically in Al-Hilal’s favour during first-half stoppage time. In the 45th+3 minute, Abdel Rahman struck from close range to give the hosts the lead.
Moments later, Girrumugisha doubled the advantage, capitalising on a period of sustained pressure to send Al-Hilal into the interval with a two-goal cushion.
Following the restart, Al-Hilal focused on disrupting Sundowns’ rhythm, intercepting passes in midfield to slow any potential comeback.
With his side struggling to impose themselves, the Sundowns coach responded with three substitutions, a move that brought renewed energy. In the 61st minute, Arthur Sales reduced the deficit with a headed finish from a Mokoena cross.
Sensing the shift in momentum, Al-Hilal retreated deeper, prioritising defensive solidity as Sundowns pushed forward in search of an equaliser.
Despite late pressure and five minutes of added time, the Sudanese side held firm to secure a crucial win that leaves them in a strong position at the top of Group C.
