Al Ahly’s Mostafa Shobeir says contract renewal was never delayed by release clause

Al Ahly goalkeeper Mostafa Shobeir has dismissed speculation that his contract renewal was delayed by demands for a penalty or release clause, insisting he accepted the club’s policy before signing a new deal until 2029.

The Egyptian champions confirmed earlier this week that Shobeir had extended his contract by two years, adding to the remaining season on his previous deal to keep him at the club until the summer of 2029.

Speaking to Al Ahly TV, the goalkeeper said the negotiations were more straightforward than many had believed.

“My presence at Al Ahly is a blessing from God. I am in my home, and what exists between me and Al Ahly is more than just a contract,” he said.

Shobeir rejected reports that disagreements over a penalty clause had held up talks.

“We had more than one meeting, but there was a misunderstanding. People thought my agent was insisting on a penalty clause and that this delayed the renewal, but that is not true.”

He explained that the issue was discussed before the team’s training camp, with both parties eventually agreeing that no such clause would be included.

“After the camp, one of the club officials explained why they did not want a penalty clause. I understood because it is the club’s system, and they felt it was not the right time to include one.”

Shobeir revealed that the negotiations later shifted to the length of the contract before Al Ahly settled on its final offer.

“The club changed its decision, and I respected that. In the end, I renewed my contract without a penalty clause.”

The 25-year-old also highlighted his family’s long-standing connection with Al Ahly, referencing his father, former goalkeeper Ahmed Shobeir.

“Our name has always been linked to this club, and Al Ahly has done so much for us. I am now the first-choice goalkeeper for Al Ahly and the Egyptian national team, and the club played a huge role in helping me reach this stage.”

Shobeir thanked supporters for their backing and urged them to remain united with the team.

“As long as we stay together, we will win trophies.”

Reflecting on Al Ahly’s victory over Smouha, he described it as a difficult contest, saying opponents often adopt defensive tactics against the Cairo giants.

“The start was a little difficult, but the most important thing is to win. Victory makes you forget the negatives, and that remains our main goal during this period.”
