CAF CONFEDERATION CUP 2014: AL AHLY SNATCH VICTORY FROM SÉWÉ SPORT IN DRAMATIC FINAL
Al Ahly SC added yet another continental trophy to their illustrious cabinet on Saturday night, clinching the CAF Confederation Cup in stunning fashion. The Egyptian giants beat Séwé Sport of Côte d’Ivoire 1-0 in the second leg of the final, enough to level the aggregate score at 2-2 and secure the title via the away goals rule, having scored in Abidjan.
It was a heartbreaking outcome for Séwé Sport, who were just seconds away from a historic win before Emad Motaeb scored the decisive goal in the 96th minute, triggering wild celebrations at Cairo Stadium. The Ivorians had held onto their 2-1 lead from the first leg until deep into stoppage time, defending valiantly throughout the match.
The match could have gone very differently. Roger Assalé, Séwé’s top striker, came close to scoring twice in the first half (9th, 29th minutes), while captain Souleymane Dembélé rattled the crossbar with a thunderous shot in the 33rd minute. The Ivorians missed multiple chances to kill off the tie — opportunities they would later rue.
Despite their efforts, it was Al Ahly’s resilience, fueled by a frenzied home crowd of over 25,000 fans, that eventually tipped the balance. The title is Al Ahly’s first-ever CAF Confederation Cup, completing their collection of African trophies and reaffirming their status as the most successful club on the continent.
