Al Ahly v Barcelona to be shown exclusively on On Sport app

Al Ahly’s pre-season meeting with Barcelona will be broadcast exclusively through the On Sport app after United Sports Company secured the rights to show the match.

The Egyptian club will face Barcelona on 19 August at Camp Nou during a training camp in Spain, as preparations continue for the new season. The game will form part of the Joan Gamper Trophy, one of European football’s best-known pre-season fixtures.

United Sports Company said making the match available through the On Sport app was part of its strategy to broaden the sporting content offered to viewers and provide major matches and events across its platforms.

The company added that it was continuing to respond to the needs of Egyptian and Arab audiences by making important matches and competitions available through its services, allowing supporters to follow major sporting events.

Al Ahly’s training camp in Spain runs from 6 to 20 August.

Al Ahly’s Joan Gamper Trophy debut

The match will give Al Ahly a new chapter in its history when the two clubs meet on 19 August in the 61st edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy.

Although the competition is a friendly tournament, it is an important annual occasion for Barcelona supporters. It marks the beginning of the club’s new season and is the official event at which the Catalan club presents its team to the fans.

The tournament was first held in 1966 on the initiative of then-Barcelona president Enric Llaudet. It was created in honour of Swiss club founder Joan Gamper, who established Barcelona in 1899 and laid the foundations for the organisation that would later become one of the world’s biggest football clubs.

The Joan Gamper Trophy has been staged every year since then, becoming a long-standing fixture in Barcelona’s calendar before the start of each season.

In its early years, the competition featured four teams. The format included semi-finals, a final and a match to decide third and fourth place.

Barcelona changed the structure in 1997, reducing the event to a single match between the Catalan side and an invited opponent. That format remains in place today.
