Al Ahly to face Girona and Espanyol

Egyptian giants Al Ahly will take on Spanish sides Girona and Espanyol in two high-profile friendly matches during their pre-season training camp in Spain as new head coach Hussein Ammouta begins preparations for the 2026/27 campaign.

The record African champions are set to travel to Spain for a 13-day training camp scheduled from July 31 to August 12, where Ammouta will oversee his first full pre-season since taking charge of the club.

The camp is expected to play a crucial role in shaping the team’s preparations, with the Moroccan tactician using the period to assess his squad, introduce his tactical philosophy and improve the players’ fitness ahead of a demanding domestic and continental season.

As part of the programme, Al Ahly will test themselves against La Liga outfit Girona and Spanish club Espanyol in two friendly matches designed to sharpen the team’s competitiveness before the new campaign gets underway.

The fixtures are expected to provide Ammouta with valuable insight into his players’ performances against quality European opposition while allowing him to experiment with different tactical systems and combinations.

Club officials are already putting the final touches on travel arrangements, visa procedures and logistical planning to ensure the squad enjoys the best possible environment throughout the camp.

The Spain tour marks the first major milestone of Ammouta’s tenure at Al Ahly following his appointment as head coach. The former Wydad Casablanca and Jordan national team boss is tasked with guiding the Cairo-based club to success on all fronts after taking over one of Africa’s biggest football institutions.

With expectations once again high, Al Ahly will be hoping the friendlies against Girona and Espanyol provide the ideal preparation as they gear up to challenge for Egyptian Premier League, domestic cup and CAF Champions League honours in the new season.
