Al Ahly to appeal FIFA Players’ Status ruling in favour of former coach Jose Riveiro at CAS

Al Ahly SC have escalated their legal dispute with former head coach Jose Riveiro by filing an appeal at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) against a ruling issued by FIFA Players’ Status Chamber.

The Egyptian giants are challenging a decision that ordered them to pay $588,000 to the Spaniard following a complaint over unpaid dues.

Riveiro had taken the club to FIFA after his brief stint in charge ended abruptly last August.

His departure came after just 96 days at the helm, with the coach stepping down in the aftermath of a 2-0 defeat to Pyramids FC.

Al Ahly had earlier signalled their intention to contest the ruling, indicating the appeal process would be initiated within three weeks.

That move has now been formalised, with club officials submitting documentation to CAS to support their case.

According to a source, the Cairo-based side’s defence hinges on a clause in Riveiro’s contract which, they argue, limits his compensation to three months’ salary in the event of termination.

The source also revealed that Riveiro’s legal team had approached the club in recent days in an attempt to reach an out-of-court settlement.

However, Al Ahly opted to proceed with the appeal, maintaining their position amid what is expected to be a multi-layered legal battle.
