Mohamed El-Shenawy is on the verge of signing a new contract with Al Ahly that would keep him at the club until 2029, reinforcing his long-standing position as one of the club’s key figures.

The 36-year-old goalkeeper, who has been a mainstay at the Cairo-based club since rejoining the first team in 2016, has reportedly agreed in principle to a two-year contract extension, with the option for a third.

The new deal would include improved financial terms, likely positioning El-Shenawy among the highest earners in the current squad.

According to sources close to the negotiations, both El-Shenawy and the club have reached a full agreement, with only the formal signing remaining before the deal is announced publicly.

If completed, the extension would take El-Shenawy’s stay at Al Ahly through to June 2029, beyond the terms of his current deal, which is due to expire in 2027.

The extension reflects Al Ahly’s determination to maintain stability in their squad by keeping experienced leaders at the heart of the team.

El-Shenawy, who also serves as captain of the Egyptian national team, has been a commanding presence in goal for both club and country.

Under the guidance of head coach Marcel Koller, he remains Al Ahly’s undisputed number one, playing a critical role in the club’s domestic and continental successes.

The Cairo giants, two-time defending champions of the CAF Champions League, see El-Shenawy as a cornerstone of their ambitions going forward.

His leadership on and off the pitch has been widely credited as one of the driving forces behind the club’s recent dominance in African football.

A salary increase as part of the extension also underlines the club’s appreciation of El-Shenawy’s contributions and their intent to reward his loyalty and consistency.

With this new contract, Al Ahly aims not only to retain the services of a seasoned professional but also to set a standard for commitment and performance for younger players within the squad.

Since returning to Al Ahly in 2016 following a spell at Petrojet, El-Shenawy has lifted multiple domestic titles and continental trophies, earning praise for his shot-stopping ability, composure under pressure, and leadership qualities.

He has also maintained a regular presence in the Egyptian national team, adding further experience and recognition to his profile.

Despite his age, El-Shenawy shows no sign of slowing down and remains physically and mentally sharp.

His performances in recent seasons have silenced any doubts about his longevity, making the club’s decision to extend his contract appear both logical and strategic.

As the formalities of the extension are expected to be completed in the coming days, Al Ahly supporters can look forward to seeing one of their most iconic figures continue in red for years to come.

For El-Shenawy, the renewed deal signals another chapter in a storied career that continues to shape the modern legacy of Al Ahly.
