Egyptian giants Al Ahly have reportedly reached a provisional agreement with Portuguese manager Jose Gomes, despite persistent links to Orlando Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro.
The Cairo-based club is on the hunt for a new manager following their decision to part ways with Marcel Koller, after the Swiss tactician failed to retain the CAF Champions League title.
In the aftermath of Koller’s departure, the 12-time African champions have been linked with several coaching candidates, including Pirates’ Riveiro, whose name has frequently surfaced as a potential replacement.
However, reports suggest the Red Devils have ruled out a reunion with former coach Pitso Mosimane, who had previously led the club to continental glory.
According to Saudi outlet Al-Youm, cited by Algomhor.com, negotiations between Al Ahly and Gomes are currently underway.
The report claims both parties have reached a preliminary agreement, with the club aiming to finalise the appointment before the FIFA Club World Cup kicks off in June.
Gomes, who currently manages Saudi Pro League side Al-Fateh, is reportedly nearing the end of his contract, which is set to expire at the close of the season, according to Transfermarkt.
