Al Ahly reach agreement with ex-coach Jose Riveiro to settle $98,000 debt

Egyptian giants Al Ahly SC have reportedly moved to resolve a financial dispute with former head coach Jose Riveiro, months after his brief spell at the club came to an end.

Riveiro arrived in Cairo in May 2025 from South African powerhouse Orlando Pirates, where he had built an impressive résumé that included league success, three MTN8 titles and two Nedbank Cups.

He was appointed ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup, with high expectations surrounding his tenure at the Red Devils.

However, the Spaniard’s time in charge proved short-lived. After just three months at the helm, Al Ahly parted ways with the 48-year-old following a run of underwhelming results.

Despite moving on to Swedish outfit AIK Fotboll, Riveiro remains entangled in unresolved financial matters linked to his departure from the African champions.

According to reports, the disagreement centres on a $98,000 payout — equivalent to three months’ salary — stipulated in his contract in the event of a mutual termination.

A source cited by Lila Kora claimed that an agreement had been reached for Riveiro to receive the amount, but alleged that the coach declined to collect the payment.

“Riveiro’s contract stipulates that he receives three months’ salary after the termination of his contract by mutual agreement between the two parties,” the source said.

“An agreement was reached with Riveiro to receive $98,000, and the Spanish coach agreed to the settlement with Al-Ahly club.

“Al-Ahly club asked Riveiro to come and collect his dues, but he refused to receive the amount of 98,000.

“We have not received anything regarding Riveiro filing a complaint against the club. We reached an agreement with him to settle his dues, and the money was ready, but he suddenly backed out.”
