Al Ahly push for new coach after shaky league start
Al Ahly are stepping up their search for a new head coach after a frustrating start to the Egyptian Premier League season left fans unhappy.
The Cairo giants sit in 15th place after six games, and the club’s football planning committee is moving quickly to secure a foreign coach who can steady the team.
Following the dismissal of Spaniard Jose Riveiro, Emad El Nahhas was asked to lead the side on an interim basis. His first game ended in a 1-1 draw with Enppi, a result that only added to the uncertainty.
A source told Kooora that some top candidates declined the job, including Paulo Bento and Fernando Santos.
“Al-Ahly did not hold a Zoom session with Santos despite the preparation and setting of a date for it, as the coach apologized hours before the session was scheduled,” the source added.
“We contacted the agent… he confirmed that the coach needs time.”
Negotiations with others, including Swiss coach Urs Fischer, remain ongoing.
