Egypt’s Al Ahly launched the Jess Thorup era with a hard-fought victory away to Aigle Noir, champions of Burundi, in the opening leg of the CAF Champions League’s Round of 32.

Playing their first competitive match under Danish manager Torup, the Red Devils secured a 1-0 win in Bujumbura—a result that puts them on track to reach the tournament’s group stage for another season.

The decisive moment arrived in the 37th minute when a cross from Mohamed Hany deflected off Burundian defender Kamiyano Nicolas and settled in the net for an own goal. Al Ahly dominated possession through the first half and created dangerous chances, but struggled to convert until that lucky break. An unfortunate injury forced striker Mohamed Sherif off just before halftime; team doctors later reported he would undergo scans for a suspected muscle issue.

In the second half, Thorup made tactical changes and entrusted Slovenian Njer Gradicar to inject fresh energy. Aigle Noir pressed hard for an equalizer, but Al Ahly’s defense, led by Yassin Marai and goalkeeper Mohamed El-Shenawy, held firm. Late substitutions kept pace and helped absorb Burundian pressure.

With this victory, Al Ahly only needs a draw or win in the return leg in Cairo to seal their passage to the next stage. The team and fans are eager to reclaim the continental crown after last season’s semifinal exit and a triumphant history boasting 12 African titles.
