Al Ahly move for Akram Tawfik advances as Al Shamal confirm departure
Al Shamal have formally announced the departure of Akram Tawfik, clearing the way for the Egypt international to move closer to a return to Al Ahly for next season.
The Qatari club thanked Tawfik for his time with the team but did not provide further details about the circumstances surrounding his exit. FilGoal.com reports that Al Ahly are close to reaching an agreement to sign the midfielder from Al Shamal as they continue to strengthen their squad for the coming campaign.
The proposed transfer is not expected to face difficulties after Tawfik reached a settlement with Al Shamal. That agreement has resolved the issues surrounding his departure and means the move to Al Ahly can now progress without a major obstacle.
If the transfer is completed, Tawfik will become Al Ahly’s fifth signing of the summer. He would follow Aqtai Abdullah, Ali Mahmoud, Algerian player Monsef Bekrar and Moroccan forward Soufiane Benjedida in joining the club during the current transfer window.
Tawfik joined Al Shamal last season on a free transfer after his contract with Al Ahly came to an end. During his time with the Qatari side, he made 23 appearances and provided three assists.
His contribution helped Al Shamal finish as runners-up in the Qatari league. The club’s announcement brings his spell in Qatar to an official close and leaves him in position to return to the Cairo-based side once the proposed deal is finalised.
The expected move would represent a return to familiar surroundings for Tawfik, who left Al Ahly after the expiry of his previous contract. While the two parties are understood to have reached an agreement in principle, the transfer still needs to be completed before it can be confirmed as Al Ahly’s fifth summer arrival.
Al Ahly have also been involved in business with Al Shamal in recent days. The Egyptian club sold their Tunisia international Mohamed Ali Ben Romdhane to the Qatari side earlier this week.
Tawfik’s departure was announced by Al Shamal on Wednesday, 12 August 2026. The club’s message of thanks followed a season in which the player featured 23 times and helped the team secure second place in the domestic competition.
Al Ahly are now expected to complete the remaining steps of the agreement with Tawfik and Al Shamal. Once that process is finished, the midfielder will join the club’s other new arrivals ahead of the next season.
