Al Ahly look to rebuild after losing to Esperance in CAF Champions League quarter-finals
Egyptian giants Al Ahly are looking to rebuild after the team’s latest setback in the CAF Champions League following their defeat to Esperance de Tunis in the quarter-finals.
Club president Mahmoud El Khatib led a meeting on Sunday, joined by vice president Yassin Mansour and board member Sayed Abdel Hafeez, focused on the team’s recent struggles and the broader issues affecting performance across multiple fronts.

The emergency talks followed Al Ahly’s elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Espérance de Tunis, who secured a 4-2 aggregate victory over the two legs.
The result has drawn sharp criticism from supporters, with frustration mounting over what many see as a decline in standards.
In an official statement, the club acknowledged the depth of disappointment among its fanbase, admitting that despite consistent backing and investment, the team has failed to deliver performances that reflect its stature both domestically and on the continental stage.
“We fully appreciate the sadness and anger of Al Ahly members, fans and supporters, due to the results of the football team, which has received all the support during the past periods, but has not delivered the performance that befits the name of the club and its status locally and continentally,” part of the club statement said.
The statement went further, underlining a commitment to accountability and transparency during this period of uncertainty.
“Based on the strong relationship that unites the club with its fans, which is always based on transparency and solidarity, especially in such circumstances, we take full responsibility and confirm the existence of technical and administrative errors whose dimensions we are well aware of, and work is currently underway to address them radically, which requires some time to ensure optimal implementation.”
While some decisions have already been taken internally, the club indicated that not all measures will be disclosed immediately, with certain announcements deliberately delayed to preserve stability as the season continues.
