Al Ahly have imposed increased financial penalties on their first-team players after Wednesday’s 3-3 draw with Al Qanah in the Egyptian Premier League.
The Cairo club avoided defeat only through a stoppage-time equaliser, having trailed until the 90+3rd minute. Morocco international Achraf Dari scored the goal that secured a point for Al Ahly.
In an official statement released on Thursday, the club said football director Wail Gomaa had ordered the players to face doubled financial penalties following the match.
“Captain Wail Gomaa has decided to impose doubled financial sanctions on the players after yesterday’s match,” Al Ahly said.
The statement added that Gomaa held an extended meeting with the squad on Thursday morning, attended by head coach Hussein Ammouta.
During the meeting, the club’s football director addressed the performances of several players who had fallen below their usual technical and physical standards. Al Ahly said there were no known reasons for that decline.
“Wail Gomaa held an extended session with the team this morning in the presence of head coach Hussein Ammouta, and made clear the concerns surrounding the fact that many players had appeared below their technical and physical levels for unknown reasons,” the club said.
The club also warned that greater responsibility would be required from every member of the squad in the coming period.
“Gomaa stressed that the next phase will not tolerate shortcomings from any individual,” the statement continued. “Everyone must review what they are contributing, and Al Ahly will not depend on any one player.”
The draw was a disappointing result for Al Ahly after they had been in danger of losing until Dari’s late intervention. The club’s announcement focused on both the financial punishment and the need for the squad to assess its contribution after a performance that fell short of expectations.
