Al Ahly are reportedly preparing to hold critical talks with head coach Jose Riveiro following a sluggish start to the 2025/26 Egyptian Premier League season.
The Red Devils have managed just one win, four draws and a defeat since the arrival of the Spanish gaffer, a run that has fueled frustration among fans and club legends alike.
Questions are mounting over the Spanish coach’s ability to steer the 12-time CAF Champions League winners back to form.
Riveiro’s position had already come under scrutiny even before the league kicked off, particularly after Al Ahly’s early exit from the group stage of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup.
Concerns intensified following Monday evening’s goalless draw with Ghazl El-Mahalla, a result that reportedly left the club hierarchy dissatisfied.
Multiple sources suggest that club president Mahmoud El Khatib is expected to meet urgently with Riveiro and his technical staff to discuss the team’s poor performances.
Reports indicate that the outcome of the upcoming clash with fierce rivals Pyramids FC could prove decisive for the coach’s future at the club.
A defeat or another uninspiring showing may trigger Riveiro’s dismissal, according to local media. The former Orlando Pirates manager has also faced criticism over his squad selections, including the notable omissions of key players Aliou Dieng and Achraf Bencharki.
Unless results and performances improve rapidly, Riveiro—who joined Al Ahly in April after leaving Orlando Pirates—may find his tenure at the Cairo-based giants cut short.
Al Ahly will now face Pyramids FC on Saturday, August 30, at the Cairo International Stadium.
