Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy reportedly rejects Egypt return under coach Hossam Hassan

Al Ahly goalkeeper Mohamed El Shenawy has reportedly decided not to feature for Egypt under current manager Hossam Hassan amid dispute.

El Shenawy was excluded from the squad for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers this month, with a chunk of football fanatics taking swipe at the coach.

Despite reports suggesting that El Shenawy could return to the national team once he recovers from his current injury, the goalkeeper is reportedly unwilling to rejoin the squad under the current technical leadership.

According to reports, El Shenawy does not want to participate in future national team camps as long as Hossam Hassan and his brother, Ibrahim Hassan, remain in charge of the Pharaohs.

The goalkeeper’s potential return is therefore directly linked to a change in the national team’s technical leadership.

El Shenawy is currently recovering from a hamstring injury and is undergoing a treatment programme with Al Ahly as he works towards a return to full fitness.

The 37-year-old remains an important figure for Al Ahly, having served as the club’s captain and first-choice goalkeeper for several seasons.

His current situation with the national team has added another layer to the relationship between Al Ahly and the Egyptian FA, particularly following the public exchange involving the goalkeeper and Hossam Hassan.
